Onyx Natural Stone

Onyx is one of the great “undiscovered” building materials of all time. Traditionally, onyx has been the favorite of Emperors, Popes and other powerful leader since at least several centuries B.C. Taking a look at where it has been used, you will find onyx walls and floors in places as diverse as the Villas of Julius Caesar and the floors installed in the Taj Mahal.

More recently, the stone, has been used by Mies van der Rohe in Villa Tughendat. Onyx can now be found on the walls and floors of many more common installations – homes, restaurants and monuments alike. It is a strikingly beautiful material that is also functional.

Here’s why:

It is Translucent

While onyx is a fairly unforgiving stone when it comes to workability, it makes a remarkable showpiece when installed properly. A home or business owner should choose this material for a floor or wall only if they have a reputable and highly experienced contractor to install it. In other words, onyx can break your heart in more ways than one… certainly for its beauty but not always for the best.

It is Variable

More so than any other type of stone, no two pieces of onyx tile will ever look completely the same. In fact, onyx will vary tremendously from piece to piece, even from the same block. Within one carton, it is not uncommon to find pieces of onyx that are completely different colors from one another. It is a truly unique – and incomparable – wall or flooring material.

It Can Be Finished in Multiple Ways

Onyx is decidedly beautiful, but the right finish can enhance this beauty to a significant degree. An owner can choose from clear finishes that highlight the natural finish of the stone to accented ones that will radiate a specific color of light into the living space.
